Constitution Day is a great opportunity for educators to bring the U.S. Constitution to life and help students discover the ideas and freedoms that shape our nation. Observed each year on September 17, Constitution Day is also a federal requirement for schools and institutions receiving federal funding to provide an educational program about the Constitution. In September, MCCHE was on the move, hosting two Constitution Day professional learning events, one in Queen Anne’s County and one in Frederick County. K-12 educators heard from MCCHE scholar Dr. Francene Engel about teaching the Constitution in challenging times, while MCCHE Executive Director Dr. Marcie Taylor-Thoma and We the People mentor Beth Rosas shared supports and strategies designed for elementary educators. We the People educator Ashley Vasick, We the People mentor Ryan Abe, and Center for Civic Education curriculum manager Kelly Reichardt also led engaging lesson demonstrations focused on federalism and the Simulated Congressional Hearing, an experiential learning program. We salute the educators who joined us to strengthen their own civic knowledge, expand their teaching toolkits, and invest in their professional growth!
