Integrated Civic Competencies

MCCHE partnered with the Center for Civic Education for Project Citizen’s latest research grant – Integrated Civic Competencies (ICC). The program is a hands-on, experiential learning approach that fosters student engagement and builds their capacity to participate effectively in government at the local, state, and federal levels. The curriculum encourages active involvement in shaping public policy and embraces collaboration to identify and research a local community issue, ultimately creating a portfolio that can be shared with other classes, organizations, or decision-makers.

Woven into the public policy activities are the civic competencies which support students in building knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that enable them to participate effectively in civic and democratic life. These competencies empower our students to engage in their communities, make informed decisions, and contribute to the public good.

Five Maryland Project Citizen educators were selected to participate in a nationwide pilot program to research the efficacy of the civic competencies lessons integrated into the Project Citizen curriculum. In July, Maryland’s ICC team participated in a professional learning summer institute alongside educators from California, Kentucky, Delaware, Kansas and Tennessee. The Project Citizen educators will participate in a yearlong professional learning community sponsored by the Center for Civic Education as the effectiveness of the civic competency delivery is researched.
